As I write this, Roosevelt Elementary is out and about exploring the redwoods of Big Basin, the coast at Natural Bridges, and at our home base here in Boulder Creek. They are led by our most amazing staff of naturalist teachers!!

2) Blue Whales, Humpbacks, Orcas, Dolphins all are being seen right now. Jump on a whale watching tour this month. Here’s a great web site for finding a tour and learning about what is being seen out there: www.monterybaywhalewatch.com/index.htm
3) Check out the amazing movie Step into Liquid. It is far more than a “surf” movie, it is a chance to vicariously experience the thrill of being on a really big wave!

Text Box: Outdoor education is a unique, once in a lifetime experience, that can open a person’s spirit in such a positive way. Each week we educate, entertain, empower, uplift and ignite a flame that leads our clients, the kids, to a better place. A friend of mine recently told me, in detail, of her experience at Exploring New Horizons when she was a sixth grade camper (she is now in her thirties). She claims that she can pinpoint her week at camp as the deciding factor for her to become a scientist. She is now working on cures for cancer.
Not all the stories are that amazing but…. the endless possibilities are out there. And that, my friend is the reason we do what we do.
Here are a few events not to be missed:
1) The Pigeon Point Lighthouse Lighting will take

Text Box: Thoughts from Scott Klein: Program Director at Loma Mar

Text Box: Thoughts from Beth Riscassi: Program Director at SVOS

Greetings from Loma Mar,

Our home, located in the Pescadero Valley and nestled in the redwoods, has provided the perfect classroom for Exploring New Horizons environmental education program for 20 years.  It is a pleasure to walk in the footsteps of so many talented naturalists and directors that have taken residence in this most majestic of natural landscapes.  It is exciting to begin a new year of outdoor education with an amazing staff of seasoned naturalists and dedicated schools from the East Bay.

Two weeks of program have passed for this fall season and I am beginning to realize the effectiveness of the Loma Mar program.  I

have witnessed the change that takes place within the students from the day they arrive and are welcomed with a redwood hug to the moment they leave on Friday.  For many children this is their first and hopefully not their last experience in a natural classroom.  The staff at Loma Mar has created a feeling that complements this landscape and reminds us all that we, in the words of Former Principal Tad Drake, are all like redwoods.

  Pescadarily Yours,

            - Scott
